The owners have unfortunately become greedy. Rules for membership have changed and it is no longer the friendly site it used to be. You can now basically do nothing unless you pay for membership. There are of course many fakes and flakes on the site, which if you can actually look at the profiles you can generally figure out. Having been a member with free Gold membership for several years, I was really surprised that unannounced, my Gold membership was taken away even though I was the number 1 most popular profile in the state. Customer service were not aware nor escalation group aware until I made contact four times to find out what was going on that the rules had changed.

Until and unless the site owners reinstate free gold membership for the most popular profiles, those profiles of course encouraging others to join with or upgrade to a paid membership so those profile owners can communicate with the popular people, I suggest that Fetlife is a much better option.

The editors of this review site should revisit their review now that the rules of membership for Alt have so dramatically changed. It will be interesting to see if their views... (Read the full review)

I used and paid for a profile for over a year trying to find someone near me and while the member base was decent most of the profiles are inactive. Around the time I left they made it so ONLY paying members could actually message further hindering it cause I decided not to renew my membership. I had a poor experience in general and would not recommend it to anyone. I'd say join fetlife instead because not only does it have more active members they also can set up events and you can view them near you making it easier to go out and meet people instead of being teased on a website

In summary, I would not recommend Alt.com to a friend.

Wow! I thought I was pretty kinky until I joined Alt.com, but some of the men and women on this site are positively sick and way too hardcore for me. That said, there are plenty of subs (and doms) on here who are into mild punishment and bdsm play, so in that respect I am happy. The site doesn't have as many members as Adult FriendFinder (its sister site) but as it's not a mainstream adult dating site that's only to be expected. Expect to find lots of slaves, masters, subs and doms on this site, as well as those into watersports, role-playing, uniforms, orgies, threesomes and other kinky stuff.

In summary, I would recommend Alt.com to a friend.

Alt.com does have a large member base, however the site itself and its functionality is increasingly lacking. Chatting and contacting people works well, private messages with email addresses are no longer blocked as they used to be, so one can move fast to other domains to continue getting to know one another. Also there are blogs and instant messaging available for interaction.

On the other hand, there are multiple basic features that do not work as one would assume, for example searching profiles with a distance from yourself or a selected location does not include other countries within the given distance, instead matches are possible only in the selected country (or of one's country of location). Anywhere else than the largest of countries this makes the search much less usable. Also there are other glitches, e.g. wrong locations (in the form of 'New York, France') shown in profiles in search results, which hinders the overall usability.

One major downside is the poor customer service, especially when there are issues with certain functionality on the site.
